Something Left Out is a book dedicated to one purpose: exploring the enigma of Tom Bombadil in as comprehensive a manner as possible. The book does not aim to "solve" or "answer" the 'conscious enigma' Tolkien created with the character, because it was not intended to be a resolvable question. However, this book serves to clarify the question of Tom Bombadil by looking first and foremost at the evidence of the text. The book will also serve as a guide to the critical responses and academic work done on the subject of Tom, and explore the history of the various interpretations of the meaning of his character. Finally, this book presents a new theory almost entirely overlooked in the past, that suggests the nature of Tom Bombadil lands even closer to home for Tolkien than previously thought.
