Tolkien the Anti-Imperialist?
Presentation SubmissionsGraeme Cheadle
This paper asks some simple yet important questions: How can everyone feel welcome in fantasy if fantasy is increasingly associated with highly reactionary and exclusionary social and political movements? Was Tolkien really just an inveterate old Tory, inevitably conservative in his outlook? Was this outlook hard-wired into his own stories? This is certainly a claim one often encounters in the wilds of online discourse. But if so, can “everyone” really enjoy Tolkien? Is fantasy only for white, straight, cis-men? The claim can be made of course that fantasy has been dominated by white people (if not only white men) in the past. In this presentation, Graeme Cheadle attempts to answer some of these questions and explore concepts that will take you on a journey worthy of the Nine Walkers.
