The Flight: Book I of the Den-Aronel Chronicles
Fiction SubmissionsStacy Aannestad
The Flight, the first book in the Den-Aronel Series, is a fantasy/science fiction story set on the planet Ryth.
Naval Captain Ariden of the Den-Aronel is ready for a respite after more than a decade of war. Now that his clan has come out victorious, he wishes to face nothing more than his young children's sibling rivalry, his beloved wife Mira by his side. But then his world shatters, literally. under the blasts of high technology aliens invading their intentionally low-technology world.
The Rythians plunge into a nightmare, forced to make a choice: Capitulate to the aliens and serve their leader-god, or hold onto their faith in the True One and be annihilated. Ari and his people choose a third path -- trust to the True One and take flight.
A Protector by Gifting, Ari feels keenly his responsibility in leading the Den-Aronel people through the perilous journey inland. But how can he do so when the new chieftain questions his judgment? And how is he to safeguard not only his treasured family, but the whole remnant of the Den-Aronel? Attacked by the aliens in a narrow canyon, Ari must rally his peaceable people to battle, girded by Mira’s steadfastness, guided by the True One's wisdom and aided by the mysterious and unseen Guardians, Will Ari's fears of being like his father prove to be true, or will he rise above his heritage and bring his people to refuge?
