J. R. R. Tolkien’s Sub-creative Vision: Exploring the Capacity and Applicability in Tolkien’s Concept of Sub-creation
Rob Gosselin
How can creative people apply Tolkien's concept of sub-creation to their own work? In this thesis, Rob Gosselin argues that Tolkien’s concept of sub-creation provides an inclusive framework for understanding creative practice. Analysing Tolkien's key texts on sub-creation, Gosselin reflects on the applicability of sub-creation to his own experiences as an indie game designer. Articulating the expansive, universal and capacious nature of Tolkien’s sub-creative vision, Gosselin hopes his thesis will inspire readers to embrace, with courage, their own creative power as "little makers."
